It’s hard to put into words what it means to take on the role of National Secretary of the Communication Workers Union – but I want to begin where it matters most. Thank you.
To my predecessor, Greg – thank you for your decades of service, your unwavering commitment, and the legacy you leave behind. You’ve helped shape this Union into what it is today – a strong, united, and principled voice for working people. You have set the standard high, and it has been an honour to work alongside you as National President.
To our members – every CWU member working in our industries across the country, thank you for the trust you place in us every day. This is your Union. Every win we’ve had has come from your strength, your voice, your unity.
I also want to sincerely thank the Divisional Executive, one of the highest governing bodies of the CWU, made up of representatives directly elected by members from every State and Territory, for their decision to appoint me to this role.
It’s a responsibility I do not take lightly, and I will work every day to earn the trust they’ve placed in me — on your behalf.
We are in the middle of serious change across our industries. Serious technological advancement, automation, outsourcing, policy shifts, and corporate restructure — none of it makes our jobs easier, and none of it makes our working conditions more secure without a fight.
But I give you this commitment: our Union is ready.
We will continue to be a fighting Union. A listening Union. A Union that leads from the ground up, not the top down. A Union that builds strength from the workplace floor to the highest decision-making table.
With Dahlia Khatab taking up the role of National President, and the support of your dedicated Branch Officials and reps right across the country, we are well-positioned to meet the challenges ahead. Together, we will continue to modernise, to grow, and to ensure that no member is left behind.
To those who’ve built this movement before us, thank you. To those walking beside us today – let’s keep moving forward, together. And to those not yet with us, there is no better time than now, to join our great Union.
Yours faithfully,
SHANE MURPHY
